Wikipedia Trail: From Norse Mythology to Valkyrie
I have always been very interested in Norse culture. I tend to study the languages derived from them when given the option to choose a language for my linguistic assignments. I don't know why, but they have always been fascinating to me. Recently, I bought the Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman audio book on Audible. I have always wanted to take a deeper look at these myths and Gaiman does such an amazing job telling these stories.
While listening, I became very interested in getting more information about the gods, so I started a little Wiki trail. I checked out the Norse Mythology article first, to get a little overview. From here, I became very interested in Freyja. She is always described as the most beautiful woman and I was curious if she was similar to Aphrodite from Greek mythology. After reading her description, I learned she shares a lot in common with Aphrodite. They are the goddesses of very similar things. While reading this article, I found a link to Valhalla and decided to check out that page. Valhalla is described as this feast hall that you reach when you die in battle (the truly honorable death for the Norse). It is said to be filled with a huge feast, lots of ale, and you eat, drink and fight till the end. Sounds like a very badass version of heaven, if you ask me. In this article, I learned a bit about the Valkyries, but wanted to know more. In the article on the Valkyries, I learned they were the women that carried the souls of the dead warriors to the hall of Valhalla. Norse mythology is incredibly fascinating and I will probably have another wiki trail on it next week as I continue my book.
