Caitlyn's Corner

For me, finding time to do exercises can be rough.  I have a lot of work to do for my classes outside of lecture, and unfortunately, it mostly involves doing a lot of research at my desk.  I checked out a few of these exercises to do at my desk and I really liked them.  I will definitely be continuing the ones I learned from 6 Yoga Exercises You Won't Be Embarrassed to Do at Your Desk .  I actually did these while I was at one of the little cubicle desks in the library with many people around.  A few people gave me looks wondering why thy heck I was moving so much, but most just kept on working on their own things. As a person who is stressed nearly every minute of her life, I love finding new quotes that tell you how to deal with stress.  I found this quote from Maureen Killoran that I found from another student and it really spoke to me: Image: Kuma by Caitlyn Buckley edited in paint.net I have to keep reminding myself that I am the one choosing to be stressed.  I am choosing to make this a battle and I need to just take a step back and reevaluate and see that it will work out. Image: Literary Map of London I loved this graphic that was posted in the class announcements on Sunday.  I love reading it and finding all of the classic stories that I grew up reading and others that have been on my list to read over the years.  There are a few I didn't recognize, so I will have to check them out.  I seriously love this picture, though.  It would make an awesome poster to pin up at my apartment.  This week, I watched the video: Focused and Diffused Thinking: The Ping Pong Technique from the Sprouts YouTube channel.  This video is great! It not only has a really interesting topic, but it has these neat little doodles the entire time that look like they are being hand drawn as the person narrates. 

This week's reading had me wanting to do a lot of outside research.  I read the Eskimo Folk Tales Unit and it kept bringing up questions from when I did a homework assignment on the  Greenlandic Language . I decided to review some of the facts about this language and found myself taking a little trail through the Wikipedia articles.  From the Greenlandic Language article, I became interested in what the difference was between Greenlandic and Greenlandic Inuit .  On this second page, I learned that Greenlandic Inuit is an ethnicity while Greenlandic and its dialects refer to the language.  After reading through this article, I learned that Danish is still highly spoken in the area.  I clicked on the Danish Realm link to learn more about the areas in the Kingdom of Denmark.  This kingdom includes Greenland, Denmark proper, and the Faroe Islands. Image: Teacher Walkout I am fairly certain that everyone has heard at least some of the news surrounding the teacher walkout in Oklahoma.  Starting on Monday, thousands of teachers went to the Oklahoma state capitol to protest several things regarding education in Oklahoma.  Oklahoma teachers have not received a raise in ten years, while their insurance premiums have continued to rise.  This has resulted in their take home salaries dropping drastically.  Several districts across the state have had to drop down to four-day-school weeks, because they cannot afford to be open five days a week.  Schools all across the state have had to drop activities, reduce the number of field trips, and cut back on many other programs and opportunities for the students.  My teacher friends have been sharing pictures of the state of the textbooks their students  have to use and it makes me want to cry.  I have heard that several teachers have about twenty books...

Image: Celtic Knot For some extra reading, I continued reading in the Celtic Fairy Tales Unit .  As I discussed in last week's extra reading, I am loving these tales and the fact that some come from my ancestors makes me want to hang onto every word.  My favorite part about reading these stories is the names.  Gaelic names have always held a special place in my heart because of my mom.  My mom named me Caitlyn because she loves Gaelic names, but she changed up the spelling from the traditional "Caitlin," so that I'd be a little more unique. T  I think my favorite story from the second half of the unit is Beth Gellert . This story is really beautiful, but what I love about it most is all of the names in it.  I nerded out and looked up the pronunciation for each name because the spellings are always crazy when it comes to Celtic names.  I think it would be fun to rewrite this story, but find a way to keep the names in.  I feel like the names r...

Continuing the Eskimo Folk Tales Unit, I'm discovering that these people have a very interesting and creative sense of imagination.  My favorite story that I read from this section was The Eagle and the White Whale .  This story tells of a family of brothers and sisters.  The brothers complain that the sisters have not found husbands yet, so one of the brothers sends them off to a white whale and an eagle.  After some time, they all missed each other so the brothers first saved the sister with the eagle.  Then they shot the eagle down when it came to retrieve his bride.  Next, they went for the sister with the white whale.  They made a whale hunting boat and when the sister escapes the white whale and reaches her brothers, they use their boat to out run the whale and reach the land on the other side.  This story really caught my attention, because I kept expecting something to go terribly wrong and one or both sisters would be lost.  I think ...

Last semester, I had a homework assignment for my Phonology class over Greenlandic Eskimo .  While doing this assignment, I had to do a little research for background information on the language, including some facts about the speakers.  During this research, I found that these people have a beautiful culture and I really wanted to learn more, but never really got the chance.  That's why I decided to check out the  Eskimo Folk Tales  unit.  The little background information at the top of the unit page explained where these stories came from and the dialect that the recorder spoke,  Kalaallisut , was the one my previous assignment was over.  Reading these stories helped me feel like I was experiencing and understanding another huge part of their culture.  I only with that I had studied enough of the Greenlandic Eskimo language last semester so that I could experience these stories in their original language.   Image info My ...

Following the online instructions , I updated my Canvas Profile.  I decided to add in a short little biography stating what my major is and what college I belong to.  I also updated my profile picture to be a more updated photo of myself.  Several of my professors already require us to use a photo for our profiles because they think it makes the Canvas Discussions a little more personable.  A few of my classmates have been giving me a hard time because my old photo had my hair still long and with my old glasses.  My new photo is much more like my day to day appearance.  While editing, I also discovered how to link my Google account to Canvas.  This allows me to submit assignments straight from my Google Drive without the hassle of downloading them to whatever computer I am currently using.  I often start my papers on one of the computers in the library on campus and just save it to my Google Drive so that I can finish it from wherever I want....
