Finding Mjolnir

Thor woke up one morning to find that his hammer, Mjolnir, was missing.  Very confused about what could have happened, he started to get up.  He felt a splitting headache and then little blurbs of memory from the previous night came back to him.  The Avengers had all gone out to celebrate their recent battle win.  Now, being an Asgardian, it took quite a bit of alcohol to get Thor black-out drunk, but I guess that is what happens when you've recently saved the world from epic evil for the thousandth time and your mates are there with you.

Thor tried to remember what had happened, but his head ached every time he tried to remember last night.  The only thing he could remember was being with Iron Man at some bar in Manhattan.  Thor immediately called Tony, but he simply laughed at him for not holding his liquor well.  Tony told him to call Natasha, because last that Tony saw, Thor was with her and a few others.

Natasha finally answered on the third try.  At first she was worried he was calling because the Dark Elves they fought the day before were back.  After assuring her they were still dead, he told her his problem.

"How the hell do you lose a hammer that only you can hold?" she asked him.  He was wondering the same thing.  "Doesn't it usually come back to you when you raise your hand, or whatever?"  She also mentioned that she didn't really remember everything from the night before either.

He told her he had already tried that to no avail.  "Wait," she said. "Wasn't Steve really close to being able to pick it up last time?  He was with our group at that last bar, I think.  Find him.  He might know where it is."

Thor started to call Captain America and then realized he was at Cap's apartment where he'd crashed on his couch.  Man, he was really struggling to figure out the day.  He walked over to Steve's bedroom door and knocked.  Steve opened the door and greeted Thor, "Hey, man.  Finally decided to get up I see."

"Steve, have you seen Mjolnir?  I can't find it and it won't come back to me.  This is the hammer of the gods we are talking about.  I can't seem to remember anything about last night, but Natasha said you were there."

Steve began to laugh. "Calm down, man.  Everything is fine.  At the last bar, you got really upset with this guy.  He kept saying that Bucky had better hair than you and you just weren't having it."

"Well, that's a ridiculous thing for someone to say,"  Thor interrupted.

"As I was saying, you were really upset with him.  So, you knocked him over and then took your hammerand set it on his chest.  It didn't crush him, but he couldn't move.  You walked out and began to find a taxi.  So, I grabbed it off of him, helped him up, apologized for you.  Then, I found you outside, struggling to get in a taxi, so I helped you in and you passed out the second you hit my couch."

"Oh...  Yeah, I tend to be a bit of a rude drunk after a big battle." Thor said.  "So where is Mjolnir?"

Steve shook his head at how ridiculous his friend was and grabbed the hammer off of a table behind him.  "Here," he said.  "Can you please try to keep track of it next time?"

Author's Note:
I based this story off of Freya's Unusual Wedding from Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology, but I decided to place the story in the Marvel Universe and add in some characters from the Avengers.  In the original story, Thor finds that his hammer is missing, so he goes to Loki for help.  Loki discovers that a giant has taken the hammer of the gods, Mjolnir and will not give it back until Freya marries him.  When he returns, the gods hold a council to decide how to retrieve the hammer.  After tossing through terrible ideas, Loki decides that they will dress Thor as a bride and pretend that he is Freya.  They will put a veil over his face to hide it and Loki will transform into a handmaiden to accompany him.  Thor is very opposed to this idea, but finally agrees.  At the wedding feast, Thor nearly unravels the entire plan when he cannot stop consuming ridiculous amounts of meat, ale, and pastries.  Loki smoothly covers for him with quick lies.  Finally, the giant says it is time for the wedding and he places Mjolnir in Thor's lap for a wedding present.  Thor immediately starts killing all of the guests.

I decided it would be fun to place this in the Marvel Universe, since the new movie came out last night.  I haven't seen it, yet, but I will definitely be watching it soon.  In my version of this story, I thought it would be fun to have the tone more light, so I had Thor lose his hammer after celebrating with the other Avengers.  With the help of his teammates, they had to trace his memory to find where he left it.  I thought this reminded me of how my friend always leaves her phone at a bar when we go out.

  1. Hi Caitlyn! This is such a fun story! I love that you make Steve be able to lift Thor's hammer, and I think he's really the only believable option there. Some of the other stories I read this week were pretty sad or heavy, so it's really nice to read something so fun and lighthearted, especially since it's now dead week.

  2. Hi, Caitlyn!

This is such a fun story! I often forget that Thor and Loki originate from mythology. I haven't read any of our units in which they are featured, but I would be interested to learn if the Marvel films have done their original characters justice.

This story is very well written and relatable; Thor could have been anyone who had a bit too much fun the night before. Good work!

  3. Hey Caitlyn. I am also a marvel fan, so I chose Finding Mjolnir to read. Thor has some interesting mythology stories attached to him. I had to read Norse mythology in my class at OCCC. I did not realize how much of a trickster he was. It was not just his brother. Thank you for sharing this story with us. I enjoyed reading it and I am glad I am not the only one who did not work ahead.

  4. Hey Caitlyn! I am a huge fan of the Avengers so it was awesome to see them in someone's story. It was really interesting how you turned one of Thor's original myths into something that could happen in the Marvel universe. Thor's blight certainly is relatable for those of us who can't keep our alcohol. I really enjoyed it!
